In 1816 an article appeared in a local paper that was concerning to someone in the know, it regarded a 'gentleman' by the name of Capt. James Irvin claiming he had paper's from the King of England regarding land for soldiers. [Article found at America's Historical Newspapers: Albany Advertiser, published as The Albany Advertiser Date: 01-24-1816; Issue: 35; Page: [3]; Location: Albany, New York]
Scammers have been around since people have been able to open their mouths and words came out. This particular one preyed on former soldiers or their loved ones, trying to get money for land that didn't exist. The most interesting part of this response from Gen. Shepard, for me, is that if I hadn't have found this article I would never have known that he spend many months aboard a ship traveling down and around Florida checking out the beaches and up the Mississippi to Yazou River. It must have been quite an adventure.
